A night meant for celebration turned into a nightmare on Bourbon Street as a driver plowed a pickup truck into a crowd during New Year’s festivities early Wednesday morning, killing 10 people and injuring 35 more. The carnage ended only when police fatally shot the suspect during a firefight, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

A Calculated Attack

“This was a deliberate act,” said NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. “The driver was trying to mow down as many people as he could.” The suspect also opened fire on responding officers, hitting two, who are now in stable condition. The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.

Explosive Concerns at the Scene

Federal agents are combing through the crime scene, examining the possibility of improvised explosives. Video footage from WDSU showed law enforcement using a robot to inspect the vehicle involved in the attack.

Chaos in the French Quarter

The attack occurred in the heart of the French Quarter, just hours before the city was set to host the Sugar Bowl less than a mile away. The annual college football game draws massive crowds, with fans from across the country arriving to watch the University of Georgia take on Notre Dame.

A Grim Start to the Year

The New Year’s Eve attack has left a dark cloud hanging over a city known for its vibrant culture and lively celebrations. With authorities still piecing together the suspect’s motives and the full scope of the attack, the streets of New Orleans are left shaken and tense.
