The punk rock world has lost a true pioneer. Brian James, the legendary guitarist and founding member of The Damned, passed away on March 6, 2025, at the age of 70. James, whose groundbreaking work helped define the UK punk scene, leaves behind a legacy that continues to influence generations of musicians.
A Punk Rock Trailblazer
Born Brian Robertson in Hammersmith, London, in 1955, James began his journey in music as a member of the proto-punk band London SS before forming The Damned in 1976. With Dave Vanian on vocals, Captain Sensible on bass, and Rat Scabies on drums, The Damned made history by releasing the first-ever British punk single, New Rose, in October 1976. This landmark track paved the way for punk in the UK, even preceding releases from The Sex Pistols and The Clash.
The Damned’s debut album, Damned Damned Damned, was another milestone, becoming the first full-length punk record from a UK band. James’s aggressive guitar playing and signature songwriting were instrumental in shaping the band’s early sound, blending raw energy with a rock ‘n’ roll edge.
Beyond The Damned
Although James left The Damned in 1977 after their second album, Music for Pleasure, his influence didn’t wane. He went on to form Tanz Der Youth and later co-founded The Lords of the New Church with Stiv Bators of The Dead Boys. This post-punk/gothic rock band gained a cult following with tracks like Open Your Eyes and Dance with Me, showcasing James’s ability to evolve musically while maintaining his punk roots.
Throughout his career, James collaborated with icons like Iggy Pop, members of MC5, and even The Police, further cementing his status as one of punk’s most underrated innovators. In 2022, he reunited with the original lineup of The Damned for a series of special UK shows, delighting long-time fans with a blast from the past.
A Lasting Legacy
Brian James’s contributions to punk rock cannot be overstated. His work helped set the stage for the explosion of UK punk in the late ‘70s, and his influence can still be heard in countless bands today. His aggressive, fast-paced guitar playing and raw songwriting were essential in shaping the genre’s sound and attitude.
James is survived by his wife, Minna, his son, Charlie, and daughter-in-law, Alicia. As the punk world mourns, his music will continue to inspire rebels and rockers alike.
Rest in power, Brian James. Your legacy lives on.
