A horrifying New Year’s Day tragedy unfolded on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, as a suspect intentionally drove into a crowd of revelers, killing 15 people and injuring at least 30 others. The suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a former U.S. Army veteran from Texas, was killed in a shootout with police after the attack.
The incident, which occurred around 3:15 a.m., has left federal and local authorities working tirelessly to uncover Jabbar’s motives and any potential accomplices.
The Attack on Bourbon Street
Jabbar used a rented Ford F-150 Lightning truck to bypass a police barricade before plowing into pedestrians celebrating the New Year. A black flag reportedly attached to the vehicle’s hitch has drawn investigators’ attention, as they assess potential connections to terrorist organizations, including ISIS.
“This is not just an act of terrorism. This is evil,” said New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick during a press conference.
Weapons, along with potential improvised explosive devices (IEDs), were found in Jabbar’s vehicle and at other nearby locations in the French Quarter, according to the FBI. Authorities are determining whether the IEDs were operational and if Jabbar acted alone.
President Biden Addresses the Nation
President Joe Biden spoke to the nation following the attack, revealing that Jabbar had posted social media videos “indicating he was inspired by ISIS, expressing a desire to kill.” The president confirmed the presence of an ISIS flag in the vehicle, as reported by the FBI, but cautioned against drawing premature conclusions.
A Military Background
Jabbar served in the U.S. Army from 2006 to 2020, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2009 as an administrative clerk. He reached the rank of staff sergeant before being honorably discharged. Before joining the Army, Jabbar had attempted to enlist in the Navy but never completed training.
While his military career appears unremarkable, Jabbar’s personal history includes criminal charges for theft and driving with an invalid license. Records also show that his second marriage ended in a contentious divorce, involving a restraining order petition and joint custody of a child.
Investigating a Potential Network
Federal investigators believe Jabbar may not have acted alone. “We’re aggressively running down all leads to identify potential associates and ensure there is no further threat,” said Alethea Duncan, an assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans office. Public assistance has been requested to help piece together Jabbar’s activities leading up to the attack.
A Shocking Transformation
Friends and family members expressed disbelief over Jabbar’s actions. Chris Pousson, a childhood friend, described him as “quiet, reserved, smart, and articulate.” Pousson said that in their most recent interactions, Jabbar’s social media posts reflected peaceful and uplifting sentiments tied to his Muslim faith.
“It was always positive—peace be with you, uplifting type of stuff,” Pousson said. “Nothing about this aligns with the person I knew.”
A woman who identified herself as Jabbar’s sister-in-law echoed this sentiment. “He’s the nicest person I’ve ever known,” she said. “It makes no sense.”
A Community in Mourning
As the investigation continues, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell vowed justice for the victims, calling the attack an unimaginable tragedy. “We will be relentless, and we will do everything it takes to render real justice,” she stated.
The victims, their families, and the city of New Orleans are left grappling with the enormity of the loss as investigators work to piece together how and why this devastating act of violence occurred.
