Tibet Earthquake: 7.1 Magnitude Quake Devastates Shigatse Region, Over 95 Dead

A catastrophic 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet’s holy city of Shigatse on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 95 dead and 130 injured, according to Chinese state media. The quake, centered in the mountainous region near Mount Everest, hit at 9:00 AM local time and had a depth of 6 miles, as reported by the US Geological Survey. The disaster triggered over 40 aftershocks within hours, causing widespread destruction.

Devastation in Shigatse and Surrounding Areas

Videos from the affected region show collapsed buildings, destroyed homes, and survivors being pulled from the rubble. Rescue workers are providing blankets and medical aid to those displaced, while freezing temperatures in Tingri County, near the epicenter, have added to the challenges. The China Meteorological Administration reported that temperatures are expected to plummet from 17°F to as low as 0°F by nightfall.

The earthquake disrupted power and water supplies across the region, with more than 1,000 homes reportedly damaged. In Tingri County, a popular base for Mount Everest climbers, sightseeing tours were canceled, and tourists were evacuated to outdoor areas for safety.

Tremors Felt in Nepal and India

The earthquake’s impact was also felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of India, with residents in Kathmandu and other cities recalling the horrors of the 2015 earthquake that claimed nearly 9,000 lives. While Nepal reported no major casualties this time, minor structural damage was observed in some areas.

Historic and Spiritual Significance of Shigatse

Shigatse, home to 800,000 people, is one of Tibet’s holiest cities and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, a significant figure in Tibetan Buddhism. The current Dalai Lama expressed his sorrow over the disaster, offering prayers for the victims and their families.

Rescue Efforts Underway

China’s air force and rescue teams have been deployed to the disaster zone, using drones to survey the damage and locate survivors. President Xi Jinping has called for an “all-out rescue effort” to minimize casualties and provide shelter to those affected.

Tectonic Activity in the Region

This earthquake is a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability, sitting atop the fault line where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. While earthquakes are frequent in this area, Tuesday’s event is among the deadliest China has faced in recent years.

Global Community Watches as Rescue Efforts Continue

The international community has turned its attention to the region as rescue operations unfold. With freezing conditions and a remote location complicating efforts, the affected population faces an uphill battle to recover from this tragedy.
