The Replacements: My Personal Connection to a Legendary Band

The Replacements have always been more than a band to me—they’ve been a lifelong source of inspiration and a key part of my connection to the Minneapolis-St. Paul music scene. Growing up in the Twin Cities, I was captivated by their raw energy and Paul Westerberg’s unmatched songwriting and voice.

While I missed seeing them during their heyday, I was lucky enough to catch them live twice: once when the Gear Daddies opened for them—a quintessential Minnesota moment—and again on September 13, 2014, at Midway Stadium in St. Paul with my wife. Both nights felt like witnessing history, but my most personal connection to the band came years earlier, through drummer Steve Foley.

Working with Steve Foley: A Rare Gift

In the 1990s, I had the privilege of working alongside Steve Foley, the final drummer for The Replacements, at a Minneapolis car dealership. Steve was humble and approachable, even with his history as a member of one of the greatest bands to ever come out of Minnesota.

During our time working together, Steve gifted me something extraordinary—a cymbal that had been used on one of The Replacements’ tours. It’s a piece of rock history that I cherish to this day, a tangible connection to a band that has shaped my life in so many ways.

The Legacy of The Replacements

The Replacements’ discography is a journey through punk rebellion, heartfelt ballads, and pure rock ‘n’ roll:

1. Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash (1981)

2. Stink (EP) (1982)

3. Hootenanny (1983)

4. Let It Be (1984)

5. Tim (1985)

6. Pleased to Meet Me (1987)

7. Don’t Tell a Soul (1989)

8. All Shook Down (1990)

Their lineup—Paul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson, Bob Stinson, Chris Mars, and later members like Slim Dunlap and Steve Foley—cemented their place in music history. Each brought a unique energy that made their chaotic, heartfelt music timeless.

Hoping for Paul Westerberg’s Return

Paul Westerberg’s voice and songwriting remain unparalleled. While his solo work has delivered gems like 14 Songs and Eventually, it’s been far too long since we’ve heard new music from him. A new album, a concert, or even an interview would be a dream come true—for me personally and for the countless fans who still hold out hope.

Paul, if you’re reading this, we’re still here. Whether it’s one more song, one more show, or even a conversation, your fans are ready. I’d be honored to interview you for PunkRockPress.com to talk about your legacy and what the future might hold.

A Personal Tribute to a Band That Shaped Me

The Replacements are more than just a part of Minnesota’s music history—they’re part of my personal history. From their unforgettable music to my unexpected connection with Steve Foley, their story continues to inspire me.
