Japanese Nintendo site Nintendo Dream recently published a fascinating interview with the creative minds behind this year’s hit Nintendo Switch game, Mario & Luigi: Brothership. One of the highlights came from co-producer Akira Otani, who shed light on how the game’s title evolved during development—and why it wasn’t quite the name they originally had in mind.
A Wonder-ful Name That Never Was
In the interview, Otani revealed that the team initially wanted to incorporate the word “Wonder” into the game’s title. However, that plan had to change when Nintendo announced Super Mario Bros. Wonder, making the name overlap impossible.
“Actually, at the beginning, I wanted to add Wonder. Like ‘Mario & Luigi RPG Wonder.’ But while we were making it, Super Mario Bros. Wonder came out first, so we couldn’t use it (laughs),” Otani shared during the interview.
Behind the Scenes of Mario & Luigi: Brothership
The game, which has become a standout title on the Nintendo Switch in 2024, combines the beloved humor and charm of the Mario & Luigi RPG series with fresh mechanics and cooperative gameplay. The final title, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, reflects the strong bond and teamwork between the iconic plumber brothers, aligning with the game’s themes and narrative.
A Name Change That Worked Out
While fans might wonder what could have been with the “Wonder” title, it’s clear that Mario & Luigi: Brothership has carved out its own unique identity. The game has earned praise for its engaging gameplay, sharp writing, and creative design, ensuring its place among the top Nintendo Switch games of the year.
